South-east Asia: Once you’ve set your foot there, it will steal a piece of you that you will want to come back! How do I describe this wonderful continent of our beautiful planet? It’s the land of permanent sunshine, sandy beaches with crystal clear waters, Breathtaking sceneries, delicious cheap food that you will miss once you return home, friendly people and beautiful smiles that will be forever engraved in mind. The Southeast Asia Itinerary is one that you will love. Here’s a list of the best ports you should go ashore.

1.Singapore

Singapore is the place to go out if you want to escape the mundane ship life and chill for a while. Your ship is going to be docked at the Singapore cruise terminal. The terminal itself is big enough for you to explore, there’s a great choice of food, shops, grocery stores and there’s even a currency exchange booth downstairs.Conversely, You can head to Sentosa Island which is home to the Universal Studios Singapore(you can go there if you have a lunch or dinner off). To go there, there are 3 options: Go to Vivocity mall and buy the train ticket which costs $4 or Take the cable car ride which will cost you $35 and it will take you to Siloso beach however you can choose to stop at Sentosa, there you can try bungee jumping or simply go for a swim finally the last and cheapest way to get to Sentosa Island is by walk just follow the Sentosa Boardwalk.

Other Than Sentosa Island, There are other nearby attractions such as Garden by the Bay, Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade and Clarke Quay which is the place to be if your ship is staying overnight.

2.Ho Chi Minh City.

When we talk about Vietnam, it’s always about war, famine and Poverty but Vietnam is much more than that. Ho Chi Minh or Saigon city is the place to be once you go there you will feel more homesick for this place that you do for your own country. Saigon city is a great and cheap place to buy your groceries or for shopping, great quality branded stuffs at a cheap price.
Head to Saigon Square which is a short 10 minutes drive away from the port from there’s a myriad of attractions you can go to. Ben Thanh market, Bitexco Tower and the Notre Dame Basilica cathedral are the must-dos. If you are having an overnight stay in Saigon, Go to Bui Vui walking street which is known for its vibrant nightlife and cheap beer but be careful of pickpockets there.
Make sure to try the Vietnamese coffee if you are a coffee lover and if you are not, try it anyway you will fall in love with it. Try the roadside food as well It is cheap and delicious and lastly indulge yourself in a deep relaxing massage for only $15.

3.Halong Bay

The scenery of this place will take your breath away.” Beautiful” is a weak word to describe it. If you are on a tight schedule or too tired to go out, just head to the sun deck and sip on your coffee while admiring the beauty of this place. Assuming your ship is providing a shuttle bus to VinMart Shopping mall, I encourage you to hop on the bus, go on the ride and enjoy the views. If you don’t want to go on the bus trip, there are plenty of small restaurants and cozy cafes outside the port with a speedy wifi connection.

4.Malaysia

There are two places to be in Malaysia. If your ship is Docking in Penang Port, head to George town and go to Little India. It is a vibrant little city with a mix of cultures and a blend between modern skyscrapers and old vintage buildings. If you are a foodie like me, you will love this place as it offers delicious and cheap food ranging from western to Indian and authentic Malaysian Cuisine

The second place to be is Langkawi your ship is probably going to be docked in Port Kuah. From the you can go to Go to the Underwater World or Pantai Tengah Beach. If you like none of these options, You can go for a stroll in the small shopping mall next to the aquarium or eat at Mcdonald. The trip to the places mentioned is just 10 minutes drive away.

5.Phuket

Okay so Phuket is a bit tricky to get around. Once you get out of the ship, You will get swarmed over by a bunch of taxi drivers who will try to sell their services to you at an exorbitant price. You will have to find an honest taxi driver, one that won’t rip you off. From there I suggest you to go the nearby beach which is Ao Yon beach, a short 15 minutes drive away. There’s an amazing bar which serves delicious cocktails,a massage shop where I paid $7/hr for a very relaxing massage. If you don’t want to spend money on these things then you can simply go for a swim or sunbathe.
Don’t forget to try the Pad thai outside the terminal, there’s a small hawker’s area outside where they sell delicious food and cheap clothes.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this article. Southeast Asia is a safe place but still petty crimes exist so to be careful always keep an eye on your belongings, don’t fall prey to money scams or people trying to rip you off. Be wary of sketchy people. Have safe and amazing Contract Sailors.
